Combat Sports Legged Grappling Dummy Review

Grappling Dummy Review2In this review, we are considering grappling to involve the positions and submissions common to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), mma grappling and other similar styles (due to the current overwhelming preponderance of this style grappling).

From that perspective, the Combat Sports Legged Grappling Dummy is actually a THROWING & STRIKING dummy, rather than a submission grappling dummy.
The use of the term “grappling dummy” in its name may be a bit misleading, if you are among those who consider grappling to involve positions like guard, mount and side control, and moves like armbars, chokes, kimura locks, leglocks and such.

You will see similar “mummy” style grappling dummies under many other brand names as well, as they are imported from China and sold under several labels.

The Combat Sports Legged Grappling Dummy is a good THROWING & STRIKING dummy. If you are looking for a dummy to hold against the ropes while you train knees, elbows & takedowns, and to train ground and pound, this product will serve that purpose nicely. If this were a throwing & striking dummy review, we’d rank this dummy higher.

However, if you belong to the BJJ or MMA submission fighing crowd, this is NOT for you. Unfortunately, many beginning grapplers who purchase this “mummy” style dummy don’t understand the distinction between a submission grappling dummy and a throwing / striking dummy, and end up disappointed after their purchase (see the link below.)

The video below will show you clearly what you can and can’t do with this product. Note that 99% of the demonstration is of the dummy used for throwing & striking (a good usage for this product), but you will only see a few submission grappling moves performed.

In particular, notice that positioning the dummy kneeling in your guard is not possible, and that attempts to perform pass guard (1:16), half guard pass (2:30) and quarter & back mount (3:03) cannot be performed correctly or with good form due to the design of the product.

OUR FINAL CONCLUSION

As a throwing dummy, or to put in a corner for striking, it's a good buy. As a submission grappling dummy for jiu jitsu and other similar styles, don't get it.
